STEPHEN TANZER REVIEWS MAHI WINES

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar Issue #164 – September 2012   Mahi ‘Marlborough’ Sauvignon Blanc 2011  RATING: 89(+?) POINTS ($19) Very pale lemon-yellow color. Cool aromas of lime, mint, chlorophyll, white pepper and dusty herbs. Intensely flavored and fresh, with a touch of sweetness to the deep flavors of pineapple, grapefruit and mint. Not hugely long but sappy, clean and bright. And still holding something back.   Mahi ‘Ballot Block’ Sauvignon Blanc 2009  RATING: 91 POINTS ($30) Pale bright yellow. Distinctly wild aromas of soft citrus fruits, dusty stone, white pepper, lavender and complex spices. Dense and spicy on the palate, with a sexy wild yeast character making this wine more interesting than the overwhelming majority of Marlborough sauvignons. Full and broad but not at all heavy. Finishes high-pitched and very long. I’d like to come back to this again in a year.   Mahi ‘Marlborough’ Pinot Noir 2010 RATING: 90 POINTS ($30) Bright cherry-red.
