RAYMOND CHAN REVIEWS OUR 2015 CHARDONNAYS

Mahi Marlborough Chardonnay 2015
17.5/20   4 stars

Bright straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, pale on the rim.  This has a tightly bound core of white stonefruits and white florals entwined with subtle nutty lees and oak nuances, and suggestions of minerals, unfolding to grow in volume and breadth.  Medium-bodied, the palate is finely presented and well-proportioned with stylishly restrained flavours of white stonefruits, along with subtle nutty lees and mineral detail.  The wine is smooth-flowing with a very fine, near seamless texture, and is balanced by light, lacy acidity.  The wine carries to a delicate finish of white stonefruits.  This is an elegant and finely presented Chardonnay with white stonefruit flavours and a smooth flowing, fresh line.  Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 4 years.  Fruit from the ‘Cook’, ‘Twin Valleys’, and ‘Taylor’ vineyards, and a small amount of clone 1066 from the ‘Home’ block, hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.7% alc., the wine aged 11 months on lees in 4% new barrels.

Mahi ‘Twin Valleys’ Chardonnay 2015
18.5/20   5 stars

Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues and some depth, lighter edged.  The nose is very elegant and finely concentrated with good depth of white stonefruit and citrus fruit aromas melded with soft nutty and flinty elements and a complexing oxidative suggestion, revealing some oak toastiness with aeration.  Medium-full bodied, the palate has a strong core with deep flavours of ripe white and yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit, interwoven with nutty lees and toasty oak notes.  The palate possesses a creamy barrel-ferment richness and is underlined by a fine phenolic thread.  Refreshing acidity provides balance, and the wine flows with vibrancy to a long, lingering finish.  This is a stylishly rich Chardonnay with stonefruit and citrus flavours complexed by nutty, flinty and toasty detail on a fine-textured, vibrant palate.  Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5 years.  Hand-picked clone 95 fruit from the ‘Twin Valleys’ vineyard, Fareham Lane, Waihopi, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.6% alc., the wine aged 15 month on lees in 10% new oak, then given further time on lees in tank.
