Our association with the Francis family commenced many years ago when Polly Francis applied to work a couple of weeks over vintage while she was studying winemaking. She was so good that we have now shared maybe five vintages and she has gone on to manage the Ward vineyard, which we will talk of later.

Polly’s parents, Bill and Pam Francis, have been very hands-on in the development and running of the vineyards and with their combined experience in farming, and all things that grow, it has ensured that their properties are always immaculate.

The Francis Vineyard is located off Thompson Ford Road which is further east in the valley than the winery. There is an amazing gradation of characters throughout the Wairau Valley and as you go further east you move from citric to tropical fruit notes. This vineyard is just slightly more in the tropical zone and we find that it consistently gives us fruit that has good acid aligned with riper fuller characters.

The soil in this vineyard also helps give extra weight as it has more silt and is slightly richer than our stoney sites. The soils are very even throughout the block meaning that picking decisions are easier to make, and having such a consistent vineyard with very low frost risk, makes sleeping on the cold spring nights slightly easier.
