NICK STOCK REVIEWS MAHI

Nick Stock rates and reviews Mahi’s wines in The Age/ Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2013.

Mahi ‘Marlborough’ Sauvignon Blanc 2011
RATING: 92 POINTS
“A nicely resolved and balanced wine that has a few additional layers to it when compared to the average competition in this category. Bright, ripe melon and lime fruits here, some passionfruit too. There’s a yeasty thread and added textural complexity thanks to judicious winemaking; great balance, fresh and settled.”

Mahi ‘Boundary Farm’ Sauvignon Blanc 2011
RATING: 93 POINTS
“Citrus, green papaya and lantana characters abound here with dollops of cream for good measure. A lot to like here with excellent clarity on the palate with lovely barrel rent characters sitting beautifully with the fruit on show.”

Mahi ‘Marlborough’ Pinot Gris 2011
RATING: 94 POINTS
“Some lovely, subtle oak influence rears its head on the nose of this wine from Mahi.  There are detailed fruit characters of pear and citrus, some curdy, lees nuance, and lovely, cashewy oak notes that drag you into the glass. The oak adds some structure
on the palate, which is textured, balanced and long. Lovely drinking.”

Mahi ‘Twin Valleys Vineyard’ Gewürztraminer 2010
RATING: 93 POINTS
“The Wairau and Waihopai Valleys meet near this vineyard, hence the name. It’s a complex style and one of the stand out gewürztraminers made in New Zealand, showing some barrel fermentation influence as savoury grilled nuts and spice, plenty of
concentrated rose petal and banana aromas, some honeysuckle too. The palate’s rich, smooth and creamy with a lovely textural slide, great depth and length, some impressive shape and balance to boot.”

Mahi ‘Marlborough’ Pinot Noir 2010
RATING: 91 POINTS
Fragrant, sappy-edged red cherry, dark Satsuma plum and lifted, crunchy cranberry fruit on display here. Quite sweetly fruited on the palate with plenty of exotic spice, red licorice, mushroom and gamey nuance. A sweet and sour, savoury palate structure, sandy tannin, and bright acidity is on show on the lingering finish.
