OUR HISTORY

Mahi was founded in 2001 by winemaker Brian Bicknell, inspired by a simple idea: that Marlborough’s vineyards each have their own unique story to tell.
After spending more than 15 years making wine around the world, Brian returned to Marlborough in 1996 with a wealth of experience and a desire to explore the individuality of the region’s vineyards. At a time when many wines were blended across the region, he believed the individuality of each site deserved to be celebrated.
That vision became Mahi.
As Mahi grew, so too did the collection of exceptional vineyard sites. Long-standing relationships with growers across Marlborough have allowed the range to expand while remaining true to the philosophy of expressing place through wine.
A significant milestone came in 2007 with the purchase of Mahi’s own winery. Having a permanent home provided complete control over the winemaking process and the freedom to continue refining the thoughtful, hands-off approach that defines Mahi today.
Over the years, Mahi has grown from Brian’s vision into a true family business. Alongside Brian, his wife Nicola plays an integral role in the business, and today their son Max has joined the team, helping carry Mahi into its next chapter while continuing the values it was founded on.
While much has evolved over the past two decades, the heart of Mahi remains the same: a family winery dedicated to making distinctive wines from the places and people we know best.
