WADWORTH Vineyard

When we took over the winery we were fortunate enough to attain the leasehold of a vineyard across the road and also the relationship with Mike and Cheryl Wadworth who have a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard close to the winery.

The Wadworth’s connection with the winery goes back further as Mike and Cheryl purchased this vineyard on Christmas Eve 1997 from Bruce and Beverley Cook who were also growers of ours.

The soils in this vineyard are very stony, and in many ways this site is one that you would envisage when you were trying to picture a Marlborough vineyard. It is located in the Rapaura region, which is the area that really started off the Marlborough phenomenon. The combination of warm days, cool nights and the reflected heat means that there is minimal frost risk, and that the grapes retain their fruit characters.

We have three different parcels within this block that give slightly different characters and they are picked and fermented separately.

Mike does most of the work on the vineyard himself and similar to restaurateur-owned restaurants the extra attention to detail means that the fruit from this vineyard speaks both of the site and the owner.
